We are involved in a number of ensemble singing initiatives, ranging from choirs in the wider community through to focused therapeutic singing for specific needs and populations. E.g. promoting and facilitating singing and signing choirs as an inclusive shared performance opportunity; holding vocal workshops using the ‘natural voice’ approaches and working with the breath.

SignAloud

The name 'SignAloud' was devised by students in the APW school district to describe our 'singing and signing' choir. The choir works on the principles of 'total communication' - where we use signs (with words from American Sign Language (ASL), but not using the grammar) and put them together with vocalizing the words, so that our bodies as well as our voices are focussed on communication. This helps the communication of those with language limitations and also supports students learning, or interested in learning ASL as a language, to enhance their vocabulary and signing techniques. It provides a challenge to all participants and opportunities for integration across the school, with no barriers between any age and ability, and it is so much fun to sing together!

Over a number of years, this has provided an inclusive shared performance opportunity, which was warmly welcomed by the music department's parent concerts.

SignAloud works well as an after-school enrichment program. We offer facilitation for your specific context, and also a training/mentoring program with consultation to equip your school/organization to run a SingAloud program.

Syracuse Community Choir

The Syracuse Community Choir is a non-audition choir that supports the message that 'everyone can sing!' and aims to prioritize a diverse and inclusive arena where we sing for the values of peace and justice. The choir, which was established by Karen Mihalyi 35 years ago, runs an adult, teens and children's choir and we hold 2 concerts a year for the wider Syracuse community.

As a company committed to the values of supporting every voice and celebrating the 'us' as community, along with our commitment to increased diversity and mutuality, Kath and Alyssa have been involved in the choir creative team for the past 4 years.

Everyone is welcome! Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings during our 2 seasons. We also hold some creative workshops during the season. Check this link for more information and some of our 'online' concerts during 2020.
